Letter from Roy Bruce to Maud Bruce

E.E.F. 7.10.17.

My dearest Maud :

Letters are taking a phenomenal
time to arrive these days. Perhaps I am a
little impatient and expect too much, but the
weeks seem very long as they roll by without
any news.

I expect that by the time you
receive this the first batch of Main Body officers
and men on leave and furlong will have
arrived in N.Z. New Zealand Lucky people, I expect they
will have a pretty good time. Am afraid
my chances of leave to N.Z. New Zealand are practically nil
now that I am away from the New Zealanders,
unless something happens and I return to the
Regiment again.

I do with I could get back
for a little while to see you all again, I feel
that I have been away quite long enough,
although if I don't come back before the end
of the war, there can never be any regrets on
either side.

This work appeals to me
tremendously, although I am afraid I fall
very far short of what I might have been

had I only had this opportunity when I was
younger. My brain won't work as it used to,
and one needs all one's wits I can assure
you. I think Gallipoli , last year in the
Sinai desert , and being twice wounded has
left its mark, and I can never hope for a
great deal now. However I have no regrets,
and my record will bear a very close inspection.

Should like to tell you a lot more about
my work here etc, but it can't be done in a
letter - and I don't suppose there are many
people in N.Z. New Zealand could tell you much about
an Army Corps.

French came in handy the other day,
I took a French general round the front line,
had a very pleasant day.

Robin is very fit, - I have my N.Z. groom
McGillivray with me, - I have a Welsh servant,
a regular, who turns me out in the morning
one glitter. What I shall do if I ever have
to do things for myself again I don't know.

Good night old thing, give Helen a
good humbug, how I wish I could give you
both one myself. Cheer up and be happy,
something will happen before long now.

Good night dear one
Roy.
