Letter from Roy Bruce to Maud Bruce

31 st General Port Said 28.1.1917

My dearest girl:

I am getting
fat and lazy - lying in
bed most of the day, and
living on the fat of the land
are not conducive to energy.

I am now allowed to
get up for a short time
each day and play about on
crutches, it is not a form of

locomotion that I can
particularly recommend for
a more or less active man.

One this about it, I
am having a most glorious
rest, and as the wound
is healing beautifully and
there are no complications
I consider myself very
fortunate.

Have managed to get
Military Crosses for two of my
subalterns, Johnston & Mathias ,

and I am very glad indeed.
They both thoroughly deserve
them.

There is absolutely nothing
to write about. I am making
the most of this and lying
still worrying and thinking
of nothing.

Was very glad to hear
Helen likes the Convent , give
her my best love, and tell
her to be happy.

I do hope you have
not been worrying over this

leg of mine, it is really
nothing at all, and is
doing me a tremendous lot
of good.

I am to go to England
for a holiday when the hot
weather comes on, which is
most excellent, and will
probably get me safely through
the summer.

With all my love dear
Roy
