Letter from Roy Bruce to Maud Bruce

No letters from
you for a long time, something
has gone radically wrong with
the mail lately. Expect I
shall get a whole batch shortly.
Hope so.

I hear the Compulsion
Bill has passed the House, about
time too. I have not see the
provisions but I understand
they are fairly sweeping. It is
about time they did it.

By Jove the heat here
is getting appalling, horses and
men are suffering. Personally
I am thin but fairly fit, fitter
than most I think, but one can

never tell from day to day
what tricks the sun will play.

I believe we are going back
for a rest shortly (we need it)
and I hope to get to Alexandria
for a few days sea bathing.

Had a priceless letter from
Andrews from France the other
day, I wish you could see it,
his adventures in Paris are little
gems. He got 8 days leave to
London , and by an extraordinary
coincidence his wife's leave
commenced the day he arrived.
They had a great time together
sight seeing etc. Lucky devil.
This old war owes you & I a
holiday now I think: What
say you?

When I go to Alexandria , I
am going to make enquiries
about things, and how would
you like say a month in Egypt
about Christmas time. Of course
it is all in the air, we may
not be here, and it may be
too hopelessly expensive, but it
is worth enquiring into anyway.
Don't build on it anyway, and
the you won't be disappointed.
Poor little Helen would, I am
afraid have to stay behind.
Perhaps anyway I may get to
N.Z. before then, I understand
efforts are being made to get
some of the Main Body back for
a spell.

So Kilcheuer was caught,

well, their spy system is good.
It was given to him what is
only given to a few, that is to
die at the height of his fame,
and bearing arms in his
profession. His career began late.
Once day at the Club at Limassol
in Cyprus , he threw his can &
gloves on the table and exclaimed
"Thirty two and only a d----d
subaltern"

So long old girl, next year
I think will be a happier one
for everybody.
